DASH DOT SERIES
I wanted to create a series of line drawings by breaking my pencil point over and over again. "Dash-Dot" is an on-going series exploring the process of mark-making.
There is an interesting pattern that seems to repeat during the process of breaking the pencil point: the graphite leaves the surface of the paper upon breaking but will immediately retouch given the amount of force that was applied in the breaking process. It turns out to be a dash-dot-dash effect. I immediately thought of the vernacular of architecture and that dash-dot lines have their own meanings, for example a property line or center line. It is for this reason I decided to create this series on drafting vellum.
The series pushes the boundaries of order and chaos. It questions the relationship between intent and outcome. When you apply the amount of pressure needed to break the point the line itself gets thick and wiggly. I have to surrender a certain amount of control, leaving a lot up to chance.
